Skin Care Basics

There's tried-and-true ways to properly care for your skin, from the right way to cleanse your face, to the best moisturizers and sunscreens. Before we start with the proper daily 4-step skincare routine, you'll need to know your skin type. How you care for your skin is utterly dependent on the type of skin you have.

Cleansing: Simplicity is the key. You need to find a good cleanser that your skin responds well to, and stick with it. Avoid bar soaps which tend to dry out the skin. Soap should only ever touch your skin from the neck down. We agree. Generally speaking, you choose a creamy cleanser if you have dry skin or a gel cleanser if you have oily skin.

Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. But trust us, if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice a difference almost immediately! One of the reasons men's skin looks more youthful than women's is because men tend to exfoliate daily when they shave. There are a few different ways to exfoliate skin including physical scrubs, chemical exfoliation and enzyme exfoliation. Scrubs work by removing the top layer of dead skin cells that tend to dull your complexion. We find exfoliating skin once a week with a physical scrub keeps skin glowing year-round.

Retinoids (such as Retin-A or the more moisturizing Renova) also work by removing the top layer of dead skin cells while also generating collagen in the skin. Because collagen is the skin's structural fiber, and it breaks downs as we get older creating lines and enlarged pores, it is crucial that we counteract these damaging effects as we go. Nearly any skincare experts you come across will agree that retinoids seem to be a miracle skin saver, because it encourages your skin to product more healthy cell faster (cell turnover).

Should you use a toner? Some people swear by toners, but many beauty experts do not. Toners are designed to remove all remaining traces of oil, makeup and dirt. So depending on how dirty, oily or makeupy your skin is, a toner may or may not be necessary.

Moisturize: A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter the skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily and/or acneic, it will benefit from water-based moisturizers. Aside from containing oil-based moisturizers itself, moisturizers have additional humectant properties which actually pull water moisture from the air and seal it into the skin.

Are eye creams necessary? Definately. Beauty experts strongly recommend eye creams, mainly because the skin around the eye contains no fatty tissue and is therefore very thin and susceptible to wrinkles. Special eye creams are formulated to "thicken" this area, particularly with antioxidant ingredients such as vitamin c, which actually stimulate the skin to produce more collagen, which plumps up the thin, wrinkled skin around the eyes.

Apply Sunscreen. Sunscreen is, without a doubt, THE most important part of your skincare regimen. The number one cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it's SUPER important to use sunscreen everyday from your early years on even in winter and on cloudy days. A great way to remember to apply this invaluable antiaging sunscreen is to purchase two moisturizers: One for night and one for day that includes UV protection.
