Vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid) is an extremely effective antioxidant, meaning it is one of the skin’s natural defenses against free radicals. Free radicals are what actually break down the skin cells and make us look older. They are the result of stresses such as environmental pollutants, smoking, or excess sun exposure. Vitamin C not only neutralizes the chemical reactions caused by free radicals that damage skin, but it also increases the skin’s production of the crucial skin protein: collagen. As collagen is broken down by free radicals, the will begin to sag and appear dull. So by increasing the production of collagen, vitamin C strengthens the structural support and resiliency of your skin.

Adding a healthy dose of vitamin C to your diet and using facial products that contain vitamin C can help you feel better, reduce wrinkles, and improve your overall skin quality & appearance. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) as a topical skin treatment, is actually one of the few skincare ingredients whose effectiveness against wrinkles and fine lines is supported by plentiful scientific evidence. Unfortunately, the practical use of vitamin C in skin care presents some difficulties due to its lack of stability. When exposed to air, vitamin C solution undergoes oxidation and becomes not only ineffective but also potentially harmful (oxidized vitamin C may increase the formation of free radicals). Several skin care brands we carry, offer stabilized vitamin C products, which oxidize less rapidly but unfortunately the science to maintain these formulas usually has a hefty pricetag, especially the ones concentrated enough to be effective (10% or higher).
